Bon Voyage
Since its launch in 1977, the Voyager 1 spacecraft has brought us some of the most awe-inspiring views of Earth and the outer planets ever contemplated. In its incredible journey, it has travelled farther than any other human-made object and became the first human envoy to venture into interstellar space. After nearly 50 years, its plutonium batteries are depleting to the point where they will soon lose all contact as it endeavors its last efforts to gather data about the interstellar medium. Once Voyager 1 ceases to communicate, not all hope is lost; the spacecraft carries a message from Earth. This message of hope and unity, engraved on a gold-plated record, contains a tiny fraction of who we are. As Voyager 1 continues its journey deeper into space, possibly eons from now, it might be discovered by intelligent beings able to “uncork” this message in the bottle. If capable of doing so, they will get a glimpse of a distant, in terms of space and time, species and the captivating planet they inhabited. This hot chocolate is an homage to Voyager 1, what it told us about who we are and how it carries our story into the distant future. As fascinating as the entire mission is, for this hot chocolate, we’re focusing on the proverbial “cork” on the bottle carrying the message – in this case, the cover that protects the Golden Record. The record cover is engraved with instructions on how to read the information in the Golden Record. Deciphering the cover unlocks greetings in multiple languages, songs, music and pictures of many cultures etched in the Golden Record – you could call them the spice of life. Because of this, the team at the Astronaut Ice Cream Café decided to give our Bon Voyage Hot Chocolate a mix of spices – cinnamon, cloves, and orange syrup, that will bring complexity, warmth (and joy) to your taste buds. We topped it off with the chocolate replica of the Voyager 1 high-gain antenna dish and the three masts surrounding the spacecraft, resting on whipped cream with chocolate curls and crowned with gold flakes to represent Golden Record and its cover. Additionally, we have put together a unique cup that captures the elements of the record cover, along with a QR code for you to explore. Grab a cup, delight in the spiced hot chocolate and get blown away by the science that makes this mission a true marvel of human achievement. Bon voyage, Voyager 1!
